Below is our annual appeal letter.
September 2024
Dear Friend,
Flip a switch, and the light turns on. On a cold February night, the heat comes on—the utility company doing its job. We depend on that. Food? We trust that the grocery store will have food on its shelves. Sick? Call the doctor’s office. Garbage and recycling? It’ll be picked up on Monday. And on and on. Nothing exceptional. Not front-page news. Just the stuff of life. Kind of boring, really.
For families in our community who now and again need help with life, they can rely on the Friendly House. A few examples:
Monday through Friday for 128 years…even during COVID (yep, Friendly House remained open all throughout the pandemic).
Not a day passes that we aren’t asked to donate to an organization or a cause. Probably the same for you. How does one decide?
We support many organizations, but we’ve decided to focus on Friendly House because we like the everyday family support they provide. Look at that list above one more time. It's nothing groundbreaking, but it's so very important. We feel good about that.
Please join us in making a gift to Friendly House this year.
Sincerely,
Andy & Jane Trasowech
Friendly House Donors and Volunteers

Where did we get those numbers?
Each giving level means something (all numbers are approximate):
• FH Donor: annual cost to provide food for a family visiting our food pantry (12 visits per year)
• Bucktown Donor (our first location): annual cost to provide lunch to our senior participants
• Myrtle Street Donor (our current location): annual cost of caring for one K-5th child on our Plus Days (in-service, break & inclement weather days) during the school year
• Fran Ivory Donor (our well-loved Director in the 1980’s and 1990’s): annual cost to cover emergency service vouchers given to families (clothing, prescriptions, laundry, gas)
• Jane Addams Donor (founder of the settlement house movement in America): annual cost of caring for one full day preschool child
*All gifts to the annual appeal will be used where the need is greatest.
Thanks again for your support.
