LARGE DONATION “ROLLS” INTO FRIENDLY HOUSE VIA RAGBRAI RIDERS
Some special guests arrived in Davenport as they completed their RAGBRAI ride on Saturday, July 28. Zac Larson, a native Quad Citizen who now resides in Naperville, IL and a group of his friends participated in this year’s RAGBRAI ride. They raised money for Friendly House along the way.
Friendly House was contacted by Zac Larson a couple of months ago. Zac wanted to do a fundraiser for Friendly House, in which he and his fellow riders would ask for pledges that would benefit Friendly House for the RAGBRAI ride. He grew up in the neighborhood around Friendly House and attended Jefferson Elementary as a child. He wanted to do something meaningful that would have a direct impact on the neighborhood and community that he grew up in.
Zac and Friendly House staff came up with the idea of raising money for scholarships for families that participate in our Youth Services. Friendly House Youth Services provides approximately 483,900 units of service annually in our preschool programs and approximately 252,645 units of service annually in our K-5 programs (a unit of service is one hour of care). Approximately 90% of the children enrolled at Friendly House Kid’s Corner are within the low to moderate-income federal income guidelines. 60% percent of the children have their fees subsidized by scholarships. The fee associated with the program only represents half of the actual cost of providing the care.
Donations and pledges thus far have exceeded $27,000, and the total is expected to rise to nearly $30,000 throughout RAGBRAI and after the completion of the ride. Zac Larson, his family and his fellow riders stopped at Friendly House after they completed the ride on Saturday, July 28. They met with Friendly House staff, took a tour of the building and got to see first-hand how their donations and pledges will have a great impact on Zac’s childhood neighborhood.
